Patanjali Siddhar (சித்தர் பதஞ்சலி).

  • Patanjali, the author of mystic yoga was born to Atri maharishi and anusuyai.
  • According to the Thirumanthiram of the great Saivite sage Sri Thirumoolar, Sri Guru Nandhi deva taught the science and practice of this great yoga to eight disciples namely Sanagar, Santhanar, Sanath Sujatar, Sanath Kumarar, Siva Yoga Maamuni, Patanjali, Vyakramapadar and Thirumoolar.
  • Later Patanjali wrote this Great treatise of Yoga in Sanskrit, which is now popular as Patanjali yoga.
  • He is also called snake legged Siddha பதஞ்சலியார் எனப்படும் பாம்புக்கால் முனிவர்.
  • Their primary interest of his work is to provide education, and elevate (transform) the human beings to transcendental (spiritual) life and free them from the activities of material enjoyment or material distress.
  • He along with Siddhar Thirumoolar and Vigarapatagar witnessed the cosmic dance of lord Shiva at Thillai in Chidambaram Anandathandavam.
  • Patanjali yoga sutra is one of his famous work towards Shivayogam, which constitutes Ashtanga Yoga i.e. raja yoga.
  • Now Western countries are showing interest towards yoga in order to eliminate the stressful lifestyle where Patanjali yoga is of greater fame.
  • He is well versed in both Sanskrit and Tamil.
  • He learnt Siddha medicine, Siddha yoga and gnana philosophies, which he compiled mainly in Sanskrit as Patanjali yoga sutra.
  • He is considered incarnation of lord Adishesha or Ananta Shesha who beds lord Vishnu on the ocean of milk.
  • Swami Vivekananda introduced Patanjali yoga to the western countries in the form of raja yoga.
  • Sri Gowdapathar is the direct disciple of Siddhar Patanjali and carried the teachings of him.
  • Sri Gowdapathar later mentored, Sri Adi Shankaracharya or Adi Shankara who is a well-known sage.
  • Later Adi Shankara travelled across the Indian subcontinent to propagate the philosophy of advaita through discourses and debates.
  • Patanjali Siddhar attained jeeva samathi in Rameshwaram.

Yoga Sutras are considered to serve as the basis of the yogic techniques. Maharishi Patanjali, “The Father of Yoga”, compiled 195 sutras, which serve as a framework for integrating Yoga into the daily routine and leading an ethical life. The exact date of the compilation of the Yoga Sutras is not known. However, it is believed that they were written somewhere around 200 BC. The core of Patanjali’s teachings lies in the eightfold path of yoga. The path shows the way to live a better life through yoga.
