Siddha system of medicine, India\u2019s traditional and indigenous medicinal system, is at least 5000 years old and considered to be the longest continuously practiced system of medicine. Long before invention of instruments like sphygmomanometer, thermometer, stethoscope and scanning machines like MRI, CAT, X-Rays\u00a0siddha system flourished well for its diagnostic methods and a front runner in many aspects for modern medicine system even now.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reason for siddha medicine systems success and effectiveness relies upon the strength of its diagnostic methods.\u00a0\u00a0 The diagnosis in siddha medicine system is deeply rooted in the principles, which basically defines the system, so it is inseparable from the system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Siddha physician Sage Thiruvalluvar in his work THIRUKKURAL has highlighted the importance of diagnosis as follows,<\/span><\/p>\n

What does siddha system of medicine diagnose?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Before understanding how siddha system of medicine diagnosis the diseases?, it is mandatory to understand the underlying principles which supports it.\"how<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the siddha medicine system, human body is composed of seven tissue types of the body called dhathus (\u0b9a\u0baa\u0bcd\u0ba4 \u0ba4\u0bbe\u0ba4\u0bc1 \u0b85 \u0b89\u0b9f\u0bb2\u0bcd \u0ba4\u0bbe\u0ba4\u0bc1\u0b95\u0bcd\u0b95\u0bb3\u0bcd) and three humors namely vaatham, pitham & kabam (\u0ba4\u0bbf\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0ba4\u0bcb\u0bb7\u0bae\u0bcd \u0b85 \u0ba4\u0bbf\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0ba4\u0bcb\u0b9f\u0bae\u0bcd). Also siddha system defines that the three doshas (\u0ba4\u0bbf\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0ba4\u0bcb\u0b9f \u0b9a\u0bae\u0ba8\u0bbf\u0bb2\u0bc8) and seven bodily tissues must be in balance in order lead a hale and healthy life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the procedures need to be followed at regular frequency as a daily regimen or seasonal regimen to maintain this balance which is called \u0ba4\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0ba8\u0bbf\u0bb2\u0bc8. Any imbalance from the normal level of the three life constituents initially manifest as premonitory symptom (\u0ba4\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0ba8\u0bbf\u0bb2\u0bc8 \u0bb5\u0bb3\u0bb0\u0bcd\u0b9a\u0bcd\u0b9a\u0bbf) and if it affects the other constituent it manifests as disease (\u0bb5\u0bc7\u0bb1\u0bcd\u0bb1\u0bc1 \u0ba8\u0bbf\u0bb2\u0bc8 \u0bb5\u0bb3\u0bb0\u0bcd\u0b9a\u0bcd\u0b9a\u0bbf). If all the three constituents (vatham-pitham-kabam) are vitiated it leads to complications (\u0ba4\u0bbf\u0bb0\u0bbf\u0ba4\u0bcb\u0b9f \u0ba8\u0bbf\u0bb2\u0bc8).<\/span><\/p>\n

Rule of thumb for diagnosis in Siddha System of medicine.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

As in the case of disease and treatments the concept of diagnosis also is unique in siddha system. In fact the diagnostic methods and parameters employed are exhaustive than what used in Ayurveda.<\/span><\/p>\n

Diagnosis according to Siddha system is not merely naming the disease, but identification of the imbalance of tri-energies (Doshas). The Doshic imbalance is determined by deeply studying the physical, physiological, psychic and behavioral aspects of the patient.<\/span><\/p>\n

The great siddha physician and primordial guru Siddhar Agathiyar has laid down basic rules to be followed while diagnosing,<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. The eight fold examination has to be employed in finding the dosha type of a person.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The naadi pariksh (pulse examination) method has to be used to accurately determine the imbalance in doshas.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. General systemic examination of patient has to be done.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The season and environment of the patient has to be ascertained for further diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Next the strength of Agni has to be checked. \u0ba4\u0bc0\u0baa\u0bbe\u0b95\u0bcd\u0b95\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bbf \u0b95\u0bbe\u0bae\u0bbe\u0b95\u0bcd\u0b95\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bbf etc digestive fire.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Apart from that the functioning of Dasa nadis and Dasa vayu has to be ascertained for accuracy of diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
